GLYNN BIO

GLYNN BORDERS is a Writer, Director, Solo Show Performer, Voiceover Performer, Teacher, Stagehand and Special Effects Director. He has worked in radio, film, television, Off-Broadway and Broadway Theaters in New York City. He is a proud member of the Theatrical Protection Union IATSE Local one.

Glynn began his career studying acting and directing at Lansing Community College, in cooperation with the Boars Head Theater Company, in Lansing, Michigan.

He received a scholarship at the Hartman Theater Conservatory (Artistic Director, Gene Frankel), which lead to him relocating to Stamford, Connecticut and eventually to New York City. He participated in the Playwright’s Workshop at the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theater.

During the 1980’s Glynn created theatrical workshops that he taught and toured in the public systems of Michigan, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. He was the Technical Director at The Arts At St. Ann’s in Brooklyn, New York. He worked in the scenic department for the renovation of the famous Majestic Theater, now called The Harvey, at Brooklyn Academy of Music. He was a production assistant for MOTOWN RETURNS TO THE APOLLO on NBC. He ran backstage operations for the original play, DRIVING MISS DAISY, at Playwright’s Horizon, starring Morgan Freeman. Glynn was also the stunt coordinator at Playwright’s Horizon and the Manhattan Theater Club. One of his biggest thrills ever was directing, Liz Swado’s hit musical, RUNAWAYS, at Stage Door Manor in the Catskills.

THE DARK STAR FROM HARLEM received a rave review, in 1990. The show was invited to perform at Pierre Cardin’s L’Omnibus de Maxims, in 1992.

Glynn enjoyed writing, directing and performing with various live sketch comedy companies in New York comedy clubs and cabarets.

In 1994, Glynn began to freelance as a union stagehand for the Late Show with David Letterman on CBS. It was pure luck. While working backstage of, MY FAIR LADY, with Richard Chamberlin, on Broadway, someone asked Glynn if he wanted to work at “Letterman”. Just like that. As a big fan of the show he replied, “hell yeah, man!” A week later he was called in. In 1997, Glynn began assisting in special effects. Soon he got his pyro technicians certification and was permitted to blow things up and set stuntmen on fire. Most importantly, he put them out. Glynn also freelanced at Saturday Night Live, Rosie O’Donnell, Conan O’Brien and several Broadway shows. In 2009, Glynn became the special effects director for The Late Show. In 2015, Glynn transitioned to Stephen Colbert. For twenty-two years he got to meet and work with the greatest talent in the world.

Glynn kept his feet in theater by writing and performing in solo shows in New York festivals. He won Outstanding New Script at the Midtown International Theater Festival, for his solo show, SLEEP WELL, in 2014, and he received rave reviews for his solo psychological thriller, THE ENFORCER in 2015. One reviewer’s headline was: “Glynn Borders in a tour de Enforcer.”

Glynn retired from “the coolest job in New York” on September 1, 2016 to return to THE DARK STAR FROM HARLEM.

Glynn has also designed a special effects seminar for high school and college students. It focuses on his career as a special effects director in television. Visit:

1994

Suddenly, I had the coolest job in New York. Working at The Late Show with David Letterman. Ultimately becoming the Special Effects Director. Before I knew it, Mr. Letterman retired and twenty-one years had passed by. Once again, an amazing opportunity had dropped out of the sky and into my lap. I stayed on one more year to work with Stephen Colbert.
